My Students

I have spent the last 7 years teaching Kindergarten and was nervous and excited at the chance to try something new with a jump to 2nd grade. As an early childhood educator I knew that these students had missed so much hands-on learning while they had been at home, but I had no idea of the impact on their success until we started teaching place value, then moving on to teaching addition and subtraction up to 1000!

My students cannot wait to get to the very last hour of our day so they can begin their math instruction and practice.

They are so eager because it has been the time of day where they can feel and see their growth every day! Because they have missed so much of their learning with manipulatives (base ten blocks aren't usually found around a house during quarantine), I have been trying to find ways to get these tools into their hands daily. I have more than enough blocks for each student, but no organized way to keep them in their desks for easy access during practice and assessments. I am also constantly searching for ways to make our math fun and engaging!

My Project

There is a definite lack in concrete understanding of place value which is essential to success in the 2nd grade! They must use it to add and subtract numbers (with regrouping) up to 1000!

All of these supplies would help me keep place value in the curriculum daily as engaging activities for students.

The organizational tools will help the students have easy access to all of the hands-on learning they need to be successful. They are so ready to be pros at place value, they just need more time and opportunities to see math in action!
