Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is a "place" for Place Value ... and it's in our classroom! My students need a hands-on way to learn place value stat! Place Value is the building block for all math concepts yet, year after year I have found students have difficulty understanding the concept.

My students are fourth and fifth grade special education students in the South Bronx.

For many students, the school is a haven from the many of the issues present in a high poverty neighborhood. The teachers and my school do the best we can with the limited materials we have. My students primarily have learning disabilities and are motivationally-challenged given the fact that they have been struggling with academics for years. Most are performing one to three years below grade level.

My Project

Place Value is the building block for all math concepts and yet, many times my students come into class with a very cursory understanding of how it works. Because Place Value becomes an abstract concept once the students start working with higher numbers, they have tremendous difficulty manipulating the numbers which leads to further difficulty with math concepts including estimation, addition, subtraction, and so on. I will use the Place Value Boards to make this abstract concept more concrete. Students will be able to physically change the numbers as we add and subtract to the millions. Each student will have their own Place Value Board so they can work at their own pace. In addition, students benefit greatly from constant practice with Place Value. The computer game will allow the student to apply what they are learning about Place Value while having fun!

With the Place Value Boards and games each student will finally have their own way of practicing Place Value concepts at their own pace.

Once they master Place Value, operational math becomes a much easier prospect! Place Value Boards + Place Value practice on the computer = understanding Place Value! It is the "sum" that provides the foundation for all math!
