Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the most caring group of children. They are understanding of differences in other students at our school and generously reach out every day to include others in our classroom or outside at recess. These students will share their snack with a hungry student or lend them their jacket on a cold day. This is a very compassionate and kind group of first graders.
We live in an area of poverty with over 90% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches.
This is only evident on paper and not from the amazing attitude the students bring to school. They are ready to learn every day and have inquiring minds with so many ideas to share. These students are appreciative of everything in our class.
My Project
My students are learning the value of a number can change depending on where it's placed. A visual of how one number can be more than just what you hear or see can make a huge difference in understanding the complexity of math and place value. The use of these manipulatives can allow students that need to see to believe that a one can be more than just a one. I hope these materials will help organize our thinking and allow us to become better mathematicians. Math should be a subject to understand and enjoy.
