I received a box of donated PVC pipes with limited joints and connections. Students love taking them out and trying to create with them. I have observed that their creativity is limited by the lack of connective pieces and I know with these resources, there will be NO limits!
My transitional kindergarten "Pups" (our mascots are stuffed animal puppies) all turned five in October and November.
Transitional kindergarten allows students time each day to explore their possibilities. Forty-five percent of the students at Silverwood are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Students come from a variety of social economic levels and diverse cultures.
My Project
Transitional kindergarten students are given the opportunity and time each day to explore their possibilities. I am requesting a donation of "Pipe Builders" and "Really Big Builders" kits. The former kit has colorful PVC pipes with various joints. The latter kit is made from foam with various shapes and connecting locations. These materials will give students a chance to learn engineering concepts and enjoy the act of problem solving to build. Both allow for open-ended creation and exploration.
Students will learn to work with peers to accomplish a task. These items will require team work and cooperation to maneuver materials.
Both of these skills are essential to students when attempting the rigors of common core in the future.
We can only hypothesis about the jobs of the future.
We do know that a strong STEM education accompanied by positive social emotional problem solving experiences will be very essential.
Furthermore, I find it very important that students find STEM and problem solving to be a fun and exciting activity that teaches them to persevere and focus!
