My Students
My classroom is a work hard/play hard environment. Ping Pong club started out as an after school activity, but now students pack my room during lunch to play. Students now have a more positive view of our school. Ping Pong club has brought a greater spirit of unity to my school and classroom.
My students are the reason why I love my job.
I look forward to seeing them everyday. They are positive, diverse and really good people inside and outside of the classroom. My school is a STEM school where student take rigorous Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics classes, so it is really important for them to have fun in school while they are pushing themselves academically. My school is one the most diverse schools in the city and we have a high poverty rate as well. My students love coming to my class and playing Ping Pong because it allows them to make friendships, learn something new and challenge themselves. My students are competitive and Ping Pong allows them a safe space to compete. My students want to be engaged in their school and community, but a lot of the resources we have end up going to academics or traditional sports. Ping Pong Club gives students another way to feel good about their school.
My Project
The original Ping Pong Club was a smashing success and it is still going strong thanks to the students who love Ping Pong. The materials, through constant use, are starting to get worn down and I cannot afford to keep replacing balls and paddles, so I need some outside help to keep up the club. My students love Ping Pong so much that my room has now become their daily hangout spot during lunch. However, there is not a lot of time during lunch to setup and take down the tables, so my students do not get to play as often or as long they would like.
This new table will make it possible for them to set it up faster and play more games. The new paddles and balls will help me maintain a more robust membership for the after school club that meets twice a week. The new net will replace a worn down net and we will be able to reuse the older tables for novice players. The club is completely student led and they have fostered a really positive environment where all students feel welcome.
Ping Pong Club has created a really tight knit community of students who would not have found each other without the club's existence.
They work hard and play hard and have made the school a better and more positive place to be. Your donations will allow the club to continue and grow. This new project will allow students to play more frequently and will increase the club's membership. My students' lives will be improved because they will be more social, confident and willing to grow.
