This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember finding new characters in books you just couldn't get enough of? You wanted to read more and more about them? How do you make these types of books available, when the school library hasn't bought a new book in decades?
My students are 24 very eager four, five and six year olds .
I have a class mixed of Transitional Kindergarteners, Kindergarteners and some Kindergarteners reading at a 1st or 2nd grade level. These children are overcoming challenges every day, as they grow up in a very low income (free lunch) school in a suburb of Los Angeles,California.
My students will be learning to read for the first time and I want to provide them every available opportunity. Unfortunately, due to district cuts , we have very limited library time, and our school library hasn't bought a new book at least in the last 10+years. With the limitation on library book, I feel my students will be limited in options. I bring in books from the public library they love.
My students want to read and learn . New books, from enjoyable authors allow the children to get involved in books, some can read these books and will these will help them develop stronger reading and comprehension skills
My Project
Last year I checked out Piggie and Elephant Books for the first time, from the public library. I had heard so many parents and friends talk about how cute these books were. Once I read these books to my students, I fell in love and so did the children. These books helped my students learn about Speech Bubbles, talking with exclamations, feelings and intonation.
Unfortunately I do not have these books in my class. I am currently borrowing the series from the public library, but I can only renew them one more time. Every time I turn the children are grabbing the books from the library box and wanting to read about Elephant and Piggie.
This series helps teach about acceptance of differences, understanding and friendships. sadness, cooperation, teamwork and more . There is even a book that helps to teach about bullying. These are all extremely important topics for Transitional Kinder students and Regular Kindergarten.
The children like to read the books and act out the books.
I am asking for a set of children's books called Elephant and Piggie.
I am also asking for a few other NY Best Sellers for my children . Our children need to be introduced to new and current authors and many reading opportunities need to be made available. I feel my students are hindered because the school library is never updated. I want to make sure the classroom library has the best books and series for young TK and K children.
