My students desperately need texts they can identify with. I am a new teacher to a school that is currently under-functioning in Language Arts. Teaching Ninth Grade English and Compensatory Reading, I have many students who have been socially promoted from the sixth to the ninth grade and are lacking in vocabulary and reading skills. In order to bridge the gap, I need reading materials that will engage them on a visceral level and inspire them to read actively. Many of them are brilliant kids. They can make it to college if only we can provide them texts that make this goal of catching up to expectations something that they not only expect of themselves, but that they just purely want to do out of the joy of reading things that speak to them.
Having provided my students with excerpts from "Pigman" and "Lord of the Flies", among other works, I have noticed that these two really seemed to grab my students. They wanted to read the rest. WANTED to read the rest.
Providing these kids with these books isn't helping them to just do something they have to do, it's a matter of allowing them to achieve this goal in a way that they themselves want to do it.
Your help will allow these students the ability to not only have succeeded, but to have taken an active role in deciding their own path to success. The want is there. These books will meet that want and satisfy a desperate need.
