Have you ever seen a child who has ignited his or her love for reading? My students would love to have the chance to discover what new worlds await when they read a good book.
The majority of these children are from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
Their families are suffering from job losses due to many small businesses closing their doors. Because of this, my students are not often provided with life changing opportunities. Our school is seventy percent free and reduced lunches, but we have the privilege of implementing a 1:1 MacBook Initiative.
My Project
Because of the small population of our town in Alabama, there are no incentives for industries to take root locally. I want to provide my students with an opportunity to become engaged while reading. Most students look at reading as a chore, but with the implementation of Study Island, our students will have a chance to view it in a different light. Instead, of dreading opening a book, they will become engaged in learning.
Some would consider our school to be privileged to participate in a 1:1 Macbook Initiative, and I would have to agree.
However, our students are not from privileged homes. By being able to access this program, my students will gain the confidence they need to be successful in school. They will then be able to take what they have learned and apply it beyond school into their day to day lives.
