Every morning my students ask if we are doing reading centers. During this time I work with a small group doing guided reading, and they complete various reading activities in small groups. They love working independently and look forward to the various group activities.
My students are from the inner city, of low economic status.
Many are English Language Learners, struggling to learn our language while parents speak a different language at home. All students receive free breakfast and lunch, due to the poverty level of our population. What my students lack in financial wealth, they make up for with their eagerness to acquire a wealth of knowledge. They are enthusiastic, eager, full of energy and the desire to learn. Everyday is an adventure as they are always learning something new. They brighten my day, and make my job so rewarding!
My Project
Phonics puzzles are a fun and easy way to help students learn the English language and increase phonemic awareness. These puzzles fit together to make a word that matches the picture. The students will have to match the beginning sounds of a word to the correct ending sounds. A picture is also part of the puzzle so my students who are learning English can improve their vocabulary and phonics skills at the same time. The stamps and ink pads also promote vocabulary and phonics. The students take a stamp that has a picture on it, along with partial spelling of the word that names the picture. The student must write in the correct missing letters to correctly spell the name of the picture. These puzzles and stamps provide a fun and interactive way for the students to become more fluent in English.
These phonics puzzles will make reading center time more exciting and allow the children to interact with each other while learning.
They will help improve the students' reading and decoding skills, giving them confidence in their use of the English language. There are enough different puzzles to meet the needs of students at several different levels, and enough to rotate so that they don't become bored. They will become active learners, at the same time learning to work independently.
