My Students

The students in my school come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Some of them are part of the International Baccalaurate program, Culinary Arts or the regular High School diploma. I teach Spanish 4 and 5 IB and AP Spanish Literature.

For the second year we are celebrating International Peace Day on September 21st.

We are going to have a half day event with a guest speaker and hands on activity. We would like to make a Peace Quilt that will be share with the Gainesville community in the afternoon event for our city and also decorated pillowcases to be donated to a local non-profit organization.

My Project

On September 21st, we are going to be celebrating International Day of Peace at our school. We are going to have a guest speaker and a hands-on activity. The theme this year is going to be "Empowered voices of youth". The idea is for the students to contribute to peace-building in their community by doing some community service project. . We are going to be using fabric markers and pieces of pre-cut squares of fabric to write and draw messages of peace. All of those pieces of squares will be use to make three Peace Quilts with messages to be donated to two local non-profits and one will stay at out school. Some of the students that have done quilts in the past, will teach other students how to sew them with the sewing machine.

The second part is decorating pillowcases that will be donated to a local non-profit group that works with immigrants mothers and their children.

This is going to be an event where the students will be able to express their ideas about peace-building, will learn from a speaker that has done work in peace-building and will contribute to our community by creating these quilts and pillowcases.

Later that afternoon, we are going to participate in the community wide event organized by the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding by bringing some of the squares of fabric and asking the community to also send messages of peace thru the quilts and pillowcases
