My Students

I am lucky to be able to spend my days teaching the most incredible kids. They inspire me and push me to be the best teacher and human being possible. The majority of my students have gone through more hardship and tough times in their short lives than I have experienced in the thirty-seven years I have been teaching. I teach at a Title I school where the poverty rate is above 70%. Our school provides free breakfast and lunch for all students. We also have a high transience and homeless rate, yet these little rock stars come to school every day, ready to learn and eager to create.

I strive to provide a classroom that feels homey and is setup to enhance learning for these little sponges.

My students range in ability from a kindergarten level up to a fifth grade level, so I am constantly searching for the best methods, activities, strategies, and research to reach all of my kids. My goal is to light the fire of learning and reading to propel them into a successful life.

My Project

I have been fortunate to have had professional development in the area of art linked with literacy. This evidence-based approach to teaching reading and writing uses simple art techniques along with the study of quality picture books. Students draft their ideas in pictures first, before the writing process. They learn how to create drawings that tell a story, and write words that paint pictures. This multimodal approach helps students access rich descriptive language, enriching their vocabulary, which is a very low area with the population of children I work with. It has been proven effective for a wide range of learners. I have seen tremendous gains in reading and writing skills, especially among my Title I and Special Education students in the few years I have implemented the approach. Unfortunately, my art supplies have been depleted the last two years, and I have struggled to keep the program going.

This research-based approach, intertwined with art, will light literacy on fire in my classroom, creating an atmosphere where students will want to learn every day.

I desperately need these art supplies to continue to provide hands-on experiences, using art, and for me to be able to teach these dynamic literacy lessons that will challenge and engage my students. All of my art supplies are in sad shape or completely gone. Please help to enhance our literacy growth by donating to our project.
