Picturing Starry Nights

My students need a printer and ink to share images with their families of constellations that they have taken from their homes with the class digital camera.

My Students

Learning to identify the constellations in an urban setting is difficult. My students don't think they can even see the stars in the city but this project will help them not only see and name major star but also learn to identify the constellations for each season.

My students live in a large Midwest city.

They attend a public high school and come from all parts of our city. They are an economically, geographically, and racially diverse group of students. My students are motivated to learn and are inquisitive and artistic. By attending a magnet school, they have a rigorous course load. Their observational knowledge of astronomy is lacking though, having grown up in a city and they are excited to take astronomy and get to know the night sky. This class is an elective they have chosen to take in their last year of high school.

My Project

This project gives my students the chance to study the night sky with technology they don't often associate with astronomy, cameras and printers. They will take home our class digital camera and take pictures of constellations that they have learned about in school. This gives them an opportunity to directly observe the night sky and to share this experience with their families. They will then bring the camera back to school and will use image processing software on our class computers to identify the constellation shapes and label the major stars in their pictures. With your donation students will be able to print their constellation pictures and share them with our school community and with their own families. You will be helping students to share their constellation knowledge with others which always help them to learn on a deeper level.

Most of the students in my astronomy class are seniors.

They are looking forward to college while at the same time their parents are beginning to feel bittersweet about their children leaving home. By donating, you will help them learn to identify constellations and stars, but also help them make a connection with their families. After working with their families to take the pictures, they will be able to bring home a picture identifying what they saw and have a memento of a learning experience.
