Help me buy individual copies of science trade books to enhance my 3rd grade study of animal and insect life cycles. Usually we look at color images on the Promethean board screen, but I would like to decrease the amount of time we spend looking at screens and return to the joy of "old-fashioned" books. My students are visual learners and they will positively respond to the beautiful color photographs and the gorgeously detailed lithographs in these books.
"The Girl Who Drew Butterflies" biography will launch our study of life cycles.
This thought provoking and richly illustrated book tells the story of Maria Merian an artist, scientist, entomologist, and explorer--it is said that she is the first woman to travel for scientific study. It all began with her keen observations of caterpillars in her garden as a young girl-- I think the children will surely identify with getting lost in these tiny worlds. They will be excited to learn that Maria combined her love of art and science into a profession at a time when women did not work outside the house. I know that students will be delighted to learn that a young girl's drawings eventually lead to how we identify and categorize animals today. In the spring, we will draw insects outside like Maria!
Although the three science trade books requested feature a lot of academic language to describe the animal maturation process I think students will benefit from the built in supports like captions, glossaries, indexes, and of course photos and pictures. When I read to the class, students invariably ask to return to certain sections or images--with individual books they have the luxury of pouring over their favorite passage or details on their own.
