"Pictures are worth a thousand words", you don't know how true this is for my autistic and multiply handicapped students. I am a speech-language teacher at P.S. 37 in Staten Island, New York. The majority of my students are non-verbal and are learning to communicate by use of a picture exchange system. I make picture books containing various pictures to express their wants and needs. Very often a student will see or be given an object and I have no way of getting a picture of it fast enough for them to request it again independently. Their inability to communicate adds to their frustration. I am therefore requesting a donation of a digital camera for the 12 students I provide speech-language services. By having the camera at my immediate disposal I will be able to take pictures of any object that is meaningful to my students and place it in their communication book in a matter of minutes instead of days.
