Help me give my students the ability to document the organisms and plants that they will encounter while collecting data on our coastline with digital cameras, in order to document the process of regrowth and rejuvenation of limu species.
My students are eager and excited to learn. We use the environment around us as a classroom. We are located across the street from the ocean and use the ocean as an extension of our classroom. Students here take pride in their culture and the environment. Through the integration of our environment and the knowledge of our ancestors, we move forward in modern times. We take what we have and what we know and apply it in a real world context.
Students are trained to look at the details.
Students at our school are trained to kilo (observe) the environment and how different things interact with each other. What happens in one realm will affect the next realm.
My Project
The two Nikon digital cameras will be used to take wide angle shots of the research area as well as a close up (microscope) shots of the limu that the students find. These pictures will then be used for the digital books that they will author for the younger students in grades K-2. As a Hawaiian Immersion school, we are always looking for books to add to our library that is about our local environment seen through a Hawaiian lense. Blending science, literature, and Hawaiian culture.
Documentation of our ever-changing shoreline and the ocean plants that inhabit the shoreline is important to our culture and way of life.
Students will be charged with gathering and documenting data from the shoreline. The data collected will be sent into the OPIHI project and added to a statewide study of different intertidal zones around the state of Hawaii.
These cameras will also be used in their project aimed at propagating seaweed in a tank. My students are currently testing different methods of growing limu in hopes that one day we can replant them in our oceans.
