Our classroom has children from 20 different countries who are immigrants and refugees. These picture books captivate their attention in multiple ways. Pictures convey the message of the English words they are just beginning to learn. They see themselves and the rest of their classmates represented in these books. This increasing a sense of community and willingness to engage.
These picture books chosen represent just a fraction of our classroom community of newcomer immigrant and refugee children who are dealing with trauma as well as understanding different forms of communication and neuro-divergent processing.
Our classroom not only has different countries and languages, we have different specialized needs and these picture books will help to break boundaries and allow everyone to feel recognized, included, and safe.
My class has an unmatched desire to learn not only English but information as well. They are so amazingly resilient. These children feel the responsibility of helping their family in a new country; learning the language, customs, and societal norms. Please help me help them.
