Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have overcome some great obstacles this year, including collapsing classes on the 3rd week of school after finally settling into their original classrooms. We went from small classes of 20 students to 34! We are in a tight portable classroom with minimal space. It's a brain teaser getting from one side to the next. Even so, these students have worked hard at molding together into one cohesive class and are setting and reaching goals right and left. They have fixed past behaviors and many left their negative behaviors in the dust.
These students have learned to work together, and have become SO energetic and passionate about reading.
The first couple months of school it was like pulling teeth trying to get them to participate in anything academic! Now, it's hard for me to stop them!
Our school is 100% free and reduced lunch, many from broken homes, including foster and adopted children and even homeless families. Despite the baggage they carry to school each day, they have smiles on their faces and are learning to overcome!
My Project
As stated in the background on my students, we have quite a group of 10 and 11 year olds in class together all day. Currently, we are unable to move around too much with the seating we have now. Their only options now are in their seat or on the floor.
I am hopeful for a batch of flexible seating options for my students in order to increase their focus, their attention, and their ability to move their bodies as kids need to each day!
I know that my students would be over the moon to be able to have seating options that would better suit their needs throughout the day. Whether they are working independently, collaboratively, or able to sneak some time to get lost in their book.
