My students need art supplies such as markers, construction paper and glue to help them use their creativity to expand their understanding of what they are reading.
Everyday my students come to reading class hating the idea of reading. "Reading is boring" is a phrase that can be heard often. However, many of them love to draw and doodle in class. So what if they could tell about what they read in pictures?
My students are the most wonderful group of kids on earth.
They all desire to learn and to become more advanced in their academic skills, despite their circumstances. Our school is located in one of the lower economic income area's of the county. All of my students receive free lunch and many are apart of the weekend back pack program in which they take home a back pack filled with snacks and food items help make sure they are able to have a meal or two over the weekends. All of my students are faced with many obstacles to learning. Most of my students' reading and writing abilities are three to five year below average. Despite this added challenge they love stories and with the right prompting and setting quickly over come the protest they enter with and dive into their books. They love being able to express their understanding of what they read through art. This will be one of the only opportunities for them to use art materials, as our school does not have an art program.
My Project
The students will use the art materials to create artistic renditions of the books they read to show their comprehension of the text. With each book they read they will choose one artistic path to express their understanding and one traditional method for showing their comprehension of the written text.
Having art materials to allow the students to use what they enjoy doing to improve skill areas that they struggle with will allow the students to have a little more control of their learning through a method they feel safe using.
