In North Carolina we are lucky to have a top-notch zoo that is free for in-state groups to visit. I teach Environmental Science in a mostly rural part of the state, our students come from hard-working families and close to 30% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Visiting the zoo for the day is ideal for many of my students as there is literally no cost for the actual trip itself, allowing every single student to attend that otherwise would not due to cost. Last year I took approximately 90 students to the zoo for "Earth Day" which is nationally recognized in April. To my astonishment a good majority of my students had never been to our zoo or hadn't been since grade school. While at the zoo, chaperones and groups of 10 navigated through the different exhibits locating different species of animals and plants, their habitats and general information I had asked them to collect on their laboratory handout. The students had a great time observing, inferring and collecting information. I would like to visit this April but would like to enhance their visit by providing each small group of 5 a disposable camera to take pictures of the animals and plants that they locate. Along with their collected information at the zoo, students will use the developed zoo pictures to create an informative children's book about the fauna and flora of the zoo. I believe the photographs from the cameras will motivate my students even more and enhance their projects ten-fold. A wonderful prospect would be to donate these educational children's books to our neighboring elementary schools. I will be taking 3 classes to the zoo in April and I am requesting a small donation of 16 disposable cameras with 27 exposures and developing costs. My students are hard-working and eager, this project will be exciting and unique and something they will always remember.
