I teach a wonderful class of second graders. They are excited, enthusiastic and eager to learn. Our class is delightful mix of cultures and languages; the sounds of Spanish, Hmong and English float through our room at any given moment. Our classroom is 75% English Language Learners and all come from high poverty backgrounds. Many of our students do not have enough food to eat or adequate clothing to wear.

With the current economic crisis in our country, and in the California school system in particular, there simply is not money for "extras". Our principal is strugging to find funds for copy paper, books and a librarian. Our students react well to media of any type--and in particular to video and photography. They say a "picture is worth a thousand memories," and I believe it!

A digital camera would be wonderful to help English Language Learner students expand vocabulary, create individual and class projects and keep a record of their academic and social achievements. A digital camera would be a source empowerment for students and teachers alike as we create bulletin boards, books, charts, media projects and much more!

You will make it possible for my students to gain English language skills, become more confident in technology, and take pride in their work. My students will be able to share their projects with family, friends, email pen pals and on websites. This will give them a sense of global community and allow they to be a part of a world much larger than the one they know now.
