I teach first grade in an equity plus "high priority" school. The population of our school is 81% free/reduced lunch, 20% ESL and 18% exceptional children. Our children are wonderful boys and girls who are starving for a chance to succeed. The first grade boys and girls in my room are eager to learn and thrive with any opportunity put their way. They LOVE to write their own stories and to create their own books!! In first grade, children are beginning to understand what it means to "read and write" and are at the "applying stage" in learning. My children love to become young authors, to write, edit, create, illustrate and publish their own books. The sense of pride and ownership that my children feel when they hold their own book in their hands is priceless. I am developing a publishing center in which my children can publish their own pieces of writing! In order for their pieces to be "Picture Perfect" I am writing this proposal for a die-cut machine and a set of paper punches. These resources will definitely make their creations a treasure that will be something to be proud of! Their pieces will be meticulously designed and will be read over and over. Imagine the excitement of young children when creating their own masterpieces!
