Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My building is more than 80% free lunch. The majority of my sixth grade students come from disadvantaged, single parent homes. Unfortunately, many of my students don't even live with their own parents but rather with grandparents or in foster homes. Eager to learn, but often without many resources at home, many of my students spend hours at school or, outside regular school hours, in the labs, public libraries or with dedicated teachers willing to come in early or stay late.

Despite the barriers our students face, with the combined efforts and hard work of our dedicated staff, outstanding administration and determined students, we received positive ratings on our state testing.

We also received the AVID National Demonstration School certification for our efforts and determination to prepare our students for their post secondary educations and careers. Additionally we have received AVID's National Site of Distinction for our school-wide implementation.

With hormones racing and bodies changing, these soon-to-be young adults are struggling with the challenge of growing up, becoming more independent and learning who they are, all while trying to figure out what class to go to and how to open up that dang locker!

My Project

Creating student interest is one of the most difficult things to accomplish. Pulling students away from their cell phones and video games is even more difficult.

In our after school club, we have a no technology policy, just for the hour, that requires the girls to communicate and build lasting relationships while teaching them there is more to life than a little screen.

The lost art of, well, arts and crafts, is explored through various mediums creating a lasting teamwork bond that they never forget.

Showing my girls that self-worth and self-esteem come from within and not from social media gives them the opportunity to see just how beautiful and unique they are regardless of where they come from or what their physical appearances are. This project will help them create their I Am Beautiful boards which requires them to think and reflect on all the ways they are beautiful.
