My Students

As a young child, were you constantly fascinated by the world around you? Can you remember how excited you were when you worked on your first science project in grade school, convinced that you were the next Marie Curie or Albert Einstein armed with only baking soda and vinegar?

Well my students, like many students in classrooms all over the world, can envision themselves as just that!

Science is a chance to "get messy" and experiment, learn, and discover. My kindergarten students are eager to dive head-first into their science investigations. Our school is equipped with a science lab where classes attend weekly. This is a fantastic resource for our school but it leaves kindergarten children wanting more than just a weekly dose of their science helping. I teach at a Title I school where many students are learning and speaking English for the first time in their young lives, and many more receive free or reduced lunch. Science builds their problem-solving skills, their vocabulary, their love of learning, and their sheer enthusiasm for the world around them!

My Project

We know that our public schools and teachers have high expectations to promote student achievement. The world of kindergarten looks very different from what it once did when many adults were in school. But one thing that remains is students' love of hands-on science activities, and rich, well-written picture books. To promote these high expectations students need to be engaged across all subject areas. These books are all directly linked to science lessons and hands-on experiments created and endorsed by the National Science Teachers Association to promote inquiry investigations and literacy. The NSTA books include assessment to check the children's mastery of the concepts taught which can help ensure that the high expectations of parents, teachers, and schools are met! These books and lessons are quite literally a win-win!

Donations to this project will have a profound, direct impact on the students in my classroom, and within my school in a larger setting.

This project promotes literacy through rich texts on complex scientific ideas and concepts, in addition to providing an invaluable resource with comprehensive scientific inquiries. Help me to inspire what may very well be the Marie Curies and Albert Einsteins for the next generation!
