This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach ELA to special needs students in a high school setting. Many of my students are either not reading at all or way below their reading grade. Some levels are as low as kindergarten or first grade. That pretty much means that most of our students can’t read community signs, maps or a menu
Starting in September 2010 I will be teaching ELA along with digital photography.
I am very excited about the coming school year because I plan to do a lot of projects with photos to try and help our students either learn to read important information or try to help them recognize words that will assist them in their everyday life.
My Project
If we are lucky enough to receive 4 digital cameras with flash drives then we will use them to go out into the community and take pictures of community signs. Our first project will be to take pictures of different classrooms in the school to help assist the students to get around the school. I want my students to be able to find important rooms such as the nurses office, the lunch room, and the principals office just in case they need help or there is an emergency. We will also make a map of the community and practice how to get around our school. Our students need a lot of repetition and visual cues to learn this project will help them immensely. I teach a class that consist of 12 students so I can have 4 students taking pictures while the students that can write or copy will assist as the scribers. I will also try and have students take pictures of many different scenarios and situation and then help them write a story about the picture.
I really think that my students will benefit from using the digital cameras in my ELA class.
These students are in need of new resources that will tap into their creativity and help them be independent as they leave our school. Please help me help my students.
