I teach students that have been identified as Gifted in Visual Art, in a small high school in Louisiana.

Picture this: incredible self-portraits, depicting the true character of my art students! When I introduce self-portrait assignments you can immediately observe excitement, and sometimes a little bit of fear, on the faces of my students. Our studies of art history teach us that most artists create self-portraits at some time. Creating images of self involve reflection, introspection, and is necessary for my students who will continue their studies of art in college. Currently, when we work on self-portraits, we use mirrors or photographs. Mirrors work great for quick assignments, like contour drawing, but for self-portrait projects that involve more detail, we really need photos. I have asked students to bring in pictures of themselves, but these pictures are often blurry, small, and the composition is not suitable for creating a work of art. Last year, we had to resort to the use of the "dreaded" yearbook photos for one project! My students felt that these photos did not reflect the part of themselves that they would like to depict in their work.

The donation of a high quality digital camera would greatly enhance the ability of my students to create interesting, meaningful self-portraits. I can envision my students designing poses and compositions that would provide great support as an important resource in the facilitation of creating works of art . Being able to take pictures of my students would enable me to develop more complex, personal self-portrait assignments. I have selected a Sony Cyber-shot camera, with many features ideal for my classes. This particular camera depicts natural, realistic skin tones, and very sharp details. It even has a "smile shutter" that snaps the photo automatically when the subject smiles!

Here in Louisiana, the natural disaster in our past has left invisible scars on most of my sensitive art students. When many of them lost their homes and belongings, they also lost a little bit of themselves. Self-portrait assignments in my art classes are a great tool for increasing self awareness, and can foster positive self esteem. With the donation of a digital camera, my students can use photographs of themselves to create meaningful works of art. I am sure that many of these works would become focal points in admission portfolios for colleges. My students are hard working, interested in art, and are truly deserving of this donation. With your help, I look forward to sharing the true "faces" of Louisiana.
