Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching in a Montessori environment is something truly different, in a good way! It nurtures the innate curiosity and inquisitiveness that are within all children. Our students love coming to our library to read, research and use the technology. They come to collaborate on personal and scholastic projects. They come to plan fundraisers for field trips and research crafts and look for ways to volunteer.
"And so we discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being"- Maria Montessori.
We follow (and guide) the children and they take us to some amazing places, be it handmade interactive book talks, putting on a student planned and led fall carnival, seeking to move ahead in their curriculum or just exploring questions that arise from their day to day lives. Our students constantly work toward the development of all aspects of self, respect for their community, their environment and themselves.
My Project
Is there anything better than seeing a project or event through the eyes of your students? Putting these sturdy waterproof camera's in the hands of our students will open new project possibilities, increase visual and technological literacies and entice students to look at events and projects with fresh eyes. Having multiple cameras at an event will allow comparison between each "historian" and allow students to take ownership of their community.
By donation to this project, you will help our students self-evaluate, contemplate fair coverage in events and foster engagement in individual and whole community projects.
With digital cameras, students would be better equipped to try video projects for the classroom, but also for the school at large (without the distraction of trying to utilize a phone). Each level would be able to document events and choose what goes into the yearbook giving a measure of autonomy to how their memories are documented. Middle Schoolers, in particular, have so many missed opportunities to utilize pictures and videos to catalog their service field trips and business ventures. They go cleaning up the Federal Beach, visit nursing homes and take trips to our local public library. They run a garden and could utilize photos and video to analyze how things went at their Farmer's Market booth and how they could improve.
Our students in Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle School crave this kind of technology. They are interested in photographs of their projects, their work in the gardens, their work in the classrooms and their works in the Makerspace (and of themselves). We greatly appreciate you taking a moment to consider helping our community!
