My Students
Can you imagine being picked out of your home and dropped into another country and not know a single word of that language? My students do. Every single one of them have battled a life as a refugee in their own country. Some have traveled thousands of miles to get where they are today.
My students come from all over the world, some from Nepal, some from Thailand, some from Congo, and some from Iraq.
Many of them have never been in a structured classroom with a teacher who loves them and cares for their best interests. Many of these students were born in refugee camps from all over the world with parents that were self-educated. They have battled war, loss, and neglect. They are grateful to be in an environment where adults are trusted and not feared. My students have battled the worse than I can imagine and now they deserve the best that you can imagine.
My Project
I want picture dictionaries to help my students put pictures to words. Many of these students are unfamiliar with resources such as books, pencils, chairs, table, clothes, etc. This dictionary will not only help them learn the words with the picture but help them spell the words and recognize these words when they begin reading. Also, this dictionary will assist them in building words, understanding specific phonemic and grammatical rules. Furthermore, it will help them relate the item in their home language to the English language.
With your help, these students will have better resources that will help them succeed in their new life.
They will forever remember these words, use them on a daily basis and inspire refugees all around the world that there is a better place with better people to love and care for them. They will continue the rest of their life in the States remembering the adults that help them be who they are, instead of who they might have been.
