This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are FULL of energy, enthusiasm for life, and hilarious! They keep us on my toes, and they ARE the joy in the work that I do.

Most of the students at our school are bilingual, English Language Learners, and many come from low-income households.

They have beautifully diverse backgrounds, and each have a unique personality. They thrive off of building relationships and finding connections to the world around them. They also face so many challenges, but they persevere.

My Project

When I think about how I fell in love with reading as a child (and how I continue to as an adult), I think about books that inspired me to dream, to be a better person, to feel empathy - books that in many ways inspired my own character... This is what I want for my students. As a literacy specialist, it's my job not only to help students learn how to read, but to also help them make special connections with with books and help ignite within them a love for reading. I also want to show them that reading books is so much more about learning how to read words - that through books, we can learn how to dream big, how to be kind and loving human beings, how to have empathy, how to stand up for what we believe in, and how to believe in ourselves and one another. I want my students to truly understand that knowledge is power, and they can be agents of change in their own little-big worlds.
