My Students

I am the proud teacher of 21 energetic third graders! These kids amaze me everyday with their drive for learning and creativity. In spite of the obstacles they face, their love for school and learning never ends! My campus is a Title 1 school. This means that most of the students I serve are from low socioeconomic environments that face many challenges. In spite of these challenges, my students strive to learn new concepts daily and show a love for learning.

My school serves over 800 students and 85 percent are on free/reduced lunch.

We also have a large number of refugees that attend our school. Most of my students face academic challenges due to their backgrounds and home lives. Among these challenges are dyslexia, slow-learners, learning disabilities, and language. However, I also have students who are on and above grade-level that would benefit from this type of enrichment activity. I am determined to meet the needs of ALL my students.

My Project

My students are in need of literature that is print rich and full of colorful illustrations. Picture books have a way of blending story with radiant art that children enjoy reading. The illustrations and the text work together to tell the story. This type of text is needed in every elementary classroom. Picture books allow students to make connections with the characters and events they see in the book. Making connections to ourselves, our world, and other text is extremely important in helping with reading comprehension. Picture books also help with enriching vocabulary, which is a building block of reading.

Our goal this year is to read 180 picture books!

We are excited to take this challenge. Your generous donation will help my students have books readily available in our literature lounge to explore, connect, and react to. Because picture books are short, I believe we can reach our goal with your help.

The literature that I have chosen are books that children will want to read over and over again! These picture books are print-rich and allow students to make connections, inspire wonderings, and develop a love for reading.

I'm looking forward to seeing my students enjoy reading print-rich colorful literature.
