My 4th grade classroom has been heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. It has been difficult to reach all of my scholars. I am completing distance learning by using Google Classroom, Screencastify, and Zoom throughout the week.
One of my favorite components of keeping our classroom "normal" during this time is by reading a picture book a day.
Normally in our class, we'd sit on the carpet and read a new book a day. We'd talk about the book's theme (message), make connections (text to self, text to text, and text to world), and discuss their favorite parts of the story.
I love to find new, diverse, and multicultural picture books. We often use these picture books to complete mini-lessons. For example, text structure, summarizing, finding text features, identifying figurative language, and using close reading.
I am requesting more diverse picture books that I can use to continue to expose my 4th graders to a variety of stories.
My Project
I want to continue our daily picture book a day with my scholars. I normally checked out a month's worth of pictures books from my local public library. I'm requesting books that will be read not only for this school year but for years to come.
These picture books touch on numerous topics such as social-emotional learning, diverse cultures, growth mindset, friendship, family, and character education.
The picture books will allow me to post assignments for my scholars based on the book that I read. For example, I could post on the website, Flipgrid and my scholars can post their own text to text, text to self, and text to world connection. I can also use the website, Padlet, and pose a question for all of my scholars to answer. I could ask them to summarize the story on a Google Form. There are so many wonderful opportunities for my scholars and me to still stay connected during this distance learning time.
I hope to receive these various picture books to spark a love for reading, igniting creativity, and knowing that books can allow you to take your places without even leaving your seat.
