Pickleball 101- Middle Schoolers Learn to Play a New Sport

Help me give my students my students the equipment/opportunity to learn to play one of the fastest growing sports today.

My Project

Difference in learning- Expanding horizons! One of my standards deals with identifying and participating in new physical activities for personal interest in and out of the PE class. I am wanting to teach my middle school students how to play the ever popular and growing sport of pickleball. Since students can watch pickleball on television now, there is a piqued interest in the sport- I want to capitalize on that desire to learn rules and play. Very few of my students have ever had opportunity/space/equipment to try and play. By having multiple sets of equipment, it will make it possible to have an entire class actively involved and moving during the class period.

Goals for project- Learning to play a new sport (pickleball) will allow my students the opportunity to participate in a physical activity that will provide challenges, problem solving, decision making, and risk taking.

Students Special- Many of my students love to play sports, but do not have the finances or recreational spaces to participate in racket sports ever. Coming to PE is the highlight for many students because it gets them up and moving around. Through adding new activities/sports, maybe by being open to taking a risk in my class it will help my students be willing to take risks when they go back into their core classes while also reinforcing and seeing how some core ideas (Math- angles, science- muscle movement, health- social/emotional through sportsmanship) can be used outside of that class. I want my students to learn and have fun in my class with the end goals of continuing to enjoy physical activities for a lifetime.
