Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a room full of energetic, creative, hard-working students. The demands of the common core classroom have changed the first grade experience. The rigor can create stress among our students, it is a challenge to find ways to keep our students engaged and relaxed during the school year. School is a place for learning, but learning can be so much fun!
We are fortunate to have our very own school garden which has become one of our focal points for our nutrition, health, wellness and science lessons.
In our garden, my students have observed a spider spinning its web around its next meal, a bird snacking on sunflower seeds, a caterpillar munching on leaves, butterflies gliding through our beautiful garden, and ladybugs eating aphids from our plants. They have planted things from seeds, they have cared for plants by watering, weeding and looking for pests. One of their favorite activities is harvesting from the garden. They have tasted delicious, fresh fruits and vegetables which they have helped to grow with their little hands.
My students may not be able to control the environment and the air they breathe, but they are learning how they CAN control what they eat!
My Project
If this project is fully funded, it will enhance the learning taking place in our learning garden. One of the highlights of the garden is actually harvesting what we have grown. My students have tasted things they may not usually eat. We have grown many types of lettuces, kale, fresh tomatoes, delicious cucumbers and sweet strawberries.
Having a garden sink with space to clean, cut and prepare the harvest would make the experience so much more convenient, and more teachers would be inclined to offer this experience to their students.
In order to harvest and prepare the tastings, we have to find a sink big enough and convenient enough to wash and prepare the snacks. We usually have to do all of the washing and prepping in our staff lounge area. By the time everything is set up we usually do the tastings in the classroom. With a sink in the garden, we could harvest, clean and prep as a class. Most importantly, we can enjoy our harvest right in our garden area!
This work station would be perfect for our learning garden! It is lightweight, easy to store, and easy to clean. We have the perfect area for storage. Thank you for considering donating to our project!
