Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district where my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges my students face, I set high expectations and provide my students with meaningful learning experiences in music.
My students come from varied home lives and low socioeconomic living conditions.
Our music room is always busy with learning and fun activities. In a typical week, more than 500 pre-K through 5th grade students pass through my room for general music, band, and chorus. My students love to sing, dance, play instruments and create music with each other.
My Project
My school was given awesome electric pianos, but they they need batteries to work and we have none. Students ask me every day when they will be able to play the pianos that are stacked up in the back of the room. Each piano takes 6 AA batteries and we have 30 pianos to power. Thats at total of 180 batteries to get our pianos working...that's a lot of batteries!
My 5th graders have been learning and performing popular music on ukulele and have been begging to add piano parts.
Seeing students eager to learn is wonderful and I want to encourage their learning enthusiasm! My students have been brainstorming ways to get batteries and that's when I decided donors choose might be able to help! Having batteries will allow all students to get their hands-on piano experience they very much are dreaming of.
We are also asking for some Purell and cleaning wipes to keep our instruments and hands clean during the winter cold and flu season. Making music is fun...sharing germs is not!
