I live in a rural community where many of my students don't even know where their next meal will be coming from. Many come to school because they feel loved by the staff and other students. Some may stay up all night helping take care of younger siblings. They have little time to do things that they want to do or learn things that they might want to learn. Class time may be the only opportunity to learn how to play an instrument that they have always had an interest in. Many of the students want to rise above their situation, but don't know how.
Just to see the joy on their faces when they know they can master a keyboard, flute, clarinet, or any other instrument because of a class that gave them that opportunity to help them learn.
There are several students in the class that try very hard to learn to read the notes and play the keyboard. One student was so excited when he/she was able to play the entire treble clef correctly (notes and tempo). Those students who might not have an opportunity to learn are thrilled to have the opportunity in music class to
My Project
Learning the keyboard will allow students who do not have an opportunity for engaging in any extra curricular activity to not only exercise their fingers through keyboarding, but also flex their brain and imagination. They will be able to gain valuable skills all the while reinforcing the knowledge of patterns in all areas of life, even music. Keyboarding will also help students to connect their math skills with music notation and understand the correlation between the two. Students will learn how to build chords and not only harmony in music but in life as well making getting along with others easier.
