My students are an array of different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in an urban environment. They strive to become artists and musicians who will lead our entertainment industry one day. They are highly academically motivated in their learning, as they attend an arts/performing arts high school in which they have specific majors of study in the arts. They are also college-oriented and so choose rigorous preparatory coursework such as College Board-level Advanced Placement classes. They also enjoy expressing their knowledge and their art through classroom discussions and debates, group work, and hands-on experiments and projects.
They need your help. Our school serves students in grades 9-12 and provides rigorous academics and artistic practices.
As a result, we are consistently one of the top-performing schools in New York City. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college, and our alumni have gone on to schools such as NYU, Columbia, Hunter College, and Stony Brook University. Some even go on to become musicians on Broadway, at Lincoln Center, and even at television studios.
My Project
In order to calculate the velocity of a moving ball on a track, students need the laptop to measure the speed of two air-track gliders. The speedometer needs to be connected to the glider and the laptop so the program can pick up the time of the gliders. Then, students will measure the distance and therefore, measure the speed by using the physics formula for velocity. They will also be able to measure the momentum of the cars. Students will measure the mass and velocity in order to see conservation of momentum.
Students will apply their knowledge of physics and visual aids and will become better learners from using the laptop.
They will be able to see real life examples on the computer of momentum and velocity by watching videos. They will also use the online PhET simulations to better understand the hard concepts of physics. The simulations will also be used as labs to earn hours for state accreditation to graduate high school.
