Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When my students enter my physics classroom, they are woefully unprepared with the math, logic, and reasoning skills that they need to be successful. By the end of the year, I would like them to develop reasoning skills that they can use for many years beyond my class.
My students are mostly minority juniors and seniors in a Title I high school in a suburban area of Arizona.
Driving one direction means farms and ranches; the other means fast food and low-income apartments. My school is a newer facility that offers two valuable programs: AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and IB (International Baccalaureate). The AVID program helps students to improve their grades and foster higher-education among "C" students by giving them writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, and organizational tools to help them succeed. The IB program is for students who would like the extra challenge of introductory college-level work and the opportunity to earn college credit in high school. Our principal has the dream to make IB level classes available (and eventually, obligatory) for every junior.
My Project
Have you even been in a class, but struggled to follow an example problem that your teacher/professor was working for you? Well, my students have that problem too. The Livescribe SmartPen and notebooks work together to record what I'm writing and saying as I walk through an example problem. By including this auditory aspect in the tutorial process, I can access multiple methods of learning for my students, thereby differentiating the tutorial process. My students will be able to access these tutorials at any time through my website because the pen will be able to upload the notes immediately though Wi-FI to a "cloud" that I can link to on my website. These tutorials will enable me to model the mathematical and logical reasoning for my students any time!
The goal is that my students will be able to access tutorials in problem solving and reasoning 24-7.
This will help refresh students' memories before big tests and projects where computational and reasoning skills are needed. These skills need to be practiced many times before they become an integrated part of students' thinking. The LiveScribe Pen will help my students to better understand mathematical and physical reasoning behind the problems they face today, and for many years in the future.
