This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want our 9th grade class at LHS to fall in love with science through its broad application. These are students from challenging backgrounds who have thus far been afforded limited opportunities to do any hands-on science. LHS is a Place-Based Education model, meaning that we try to get kids beyond just reading from a textbook and understanding things conceptually.

We value training students to be critical and confident thinkers in response to a dynamic and sometimes volatile environment, in addition to cultivating lab procedural skills.

All students deserve a chance to truly experience the wonder of science in a hands-on, minds-on approach. My students are naturally curious but need support to become more self-driven and focused when it comes to science.

My Project

Students are learning all about why boats float in their physics class. They have already made straw and full-scale PVC boats which they will be testing out on the bay next week. They have learned NGSS through the science and engineering practices of designing investigations to understand density, buoyancy, forces, and more. They have learned to model their understanding on paper explaining what truly makes a boat float.

The obvious next step is to make a full-size boat which they can use to get on the water.

To allow for more students to participate simultaneously we need just a few more tools!
