Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students will experience a new and exciting form of true-life Physics in Action as they learn to hit a golf ball at a local driving range. They will also learn sportsmanlike social skills. My ninth grade science students are typically inner-city, low-socio-economic children (ages 14 to 16)of diverse backgrounds. Many of them have experience with the Juvenile Justice system, or deal with other myriad challenges in their young lives. This trip will be an opportunity for them to learn science while expanding their personal horizons. None of them have ever played golf before. My goal is to introduce my students to a new and lasting experience that provides for "hands-on" realization of the dynamic physics concepts of energy, motion, force, shape, and inertia, while giving them newfound social skills awareness. This will be a fun yet meaningful field trip. This event could be a potentially positive "life-changer" for some of these kids. Learning the complex physical concepts using this new sport may ignite a spark that can help motivate them to see meaning in physics, be permanently affected by it, and apply it into their lives.
