My Students
Grass! Grass! Grass! Its time for recess and all you can look forward to is going outside to an empty, grassy space enclosed with black gates. No equipment to play with your friends, learn social skills, build friendships or to experience physical activity to improve the brain, fuel memory, or creativity which are all essential to learning.
My school is located in a neighborhood that is ranked the third most dangerous area of the city of Chicago.
We have 98.5% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch and have limited resources for our school. Through these challenges, my first graders come to school ready to learn. For the past seven years, 85% of my students have met or exceeded the goal on the primary standardized assessments. Last year, our school day was extended which allowed students to have recess everyday. We have over 600 students and no playground for them to play on. My first graders are forced to play in a small grassy, gated area. Recess is a very important part of the day. Studies show that not only does this time of movement help with child obesity but students are found to be less fidgety, more on task, improved memory, develop more brain connections, learn negotiation skills, exercise leadership, and learn to resolve conflicts. We have wonderful students that are in need of equipment and resource
My Project
The funding of these resources will have a dramatic effect on my students by helping to foster and build lifelong, healthy learners. The resources will provide an opportunity for students to engage in activities to build friendships, social skills, conflict resolution, leadership, but most importantly, a love for school and learning. These are all key components to building strong leaders in our global society. The activities provided will enhance gross motor skills, balance and coordination, movement, endurance, team building, and learn the importance of health and fitness to prevent obesity. Educating students on the importance of fitness and exercise at an early age will help lay the foundation for healthy habits in the future.
Educating young students on the importance of fitness and health makes our world a better place to live.
Fitness and exercise help build strong minds for students to learn. Having the ability to learn new and fun information is a wonderful experience. My students need this resource to help them become the best individuals they can be in life. Learning the importance of taking care of your body and building strong minds creates a better future for everyone. Thank You.
