My Students

Do you remember playing around the world on the basketball court? Or learning new sports in PE? Without a PE teacher, our school lacks equipment to make PE exciting and educational for the students.

My students go to school everyday in a school tucked off one of the major freeways that connects the high tech world of the Bay Area.

It's a forgotten corner of this high tech area, but none of that diminishes the enthusiasm that my students bring to math and science class everyday. They come from diverse cultural backgrounds and families who work hard to provide what they can for their children. They are curious, caring and courageous students who, despite having far fewer resources than other students, love learning and have big dreams. They love to read and come full of questions every day. However, they attend a school that barely scraped together funds for a music teacher. Each teacher runs their own art and PE class and our access to reliable equipment is limited.

My Project

My students eagerly anticipate Monday and Thursday afternoons when they have PE with myself and the 6th grade language arts and social studies teacher. We would like to have a structured PE time where we teach the students the fundamentals of basketball, as well as volleyball. These are two sports that we both enjoy and that our students also enjoy. We will divide the students into two groups, one for basketball and one for volleyball. The students will practice one sport on Mondays, and the other on Thursdays. We will teach an 8 week unit on each sport, culminating in a game between each group. The students will practice not only the skills of the game, but teamwork, coordination, patience, and sportsmanship.

Right now we only have 1 basketball and 1 football for our class.

Students graciously bring their own equipment from home to use during PE time. We would love to be able to provide equipment for them and create an engaging PE curriculum where students can learn new skills.
