This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher to 21 children, including 1 special needs child in California. My class contains many children on free or reduced breakfast and lunch. My class is mostly second language learners.

Our nation is facing a huge obesity epidemic. Part of the problem is that children are learning to lead sedentary lives due to all of their electronic games. Children no longer play outside after school. Their neighborhoods are either too dangerous, or they are just lazy. I feel it is my responsibility to expose them to the fun you can have when exercising. BUT... due to budget cuts we only have access to a trained Physical Education teacher for a half hour twice a month. Also, there isn't much money for classroom equipment. Many of my children bring their own balls from home. If they lose them then they no longer have a ball for home.

This donation will help me so much. Our school is trying to push healthy eating and exercise habits. We have hooked up with the Nutrition Network. They come monthly to introduce a new fruit or vegetable to the kids. It is up to me to focus on the exercise aspect of healthy habits. I am asking for Physical Education and playground equipment... Hula hoops, playground balls, basketballs, soccer balls, sensory balls and bumpy balls. With this proposal the kids will have over 40 balls to choose from to play with at recess or during PE time.

Thank you in advance for considering funding this proposal. The children will have so much fun using these materials to play and move during PE time. This is a proposal that will be used for years to come.
