My Students

I am an Instructional Technology teacher at an elementary school located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Each week I teach 700 wonderful students from many different cultural backgrounds and with a variety of challenges (IEP, 504, ELL, G/T.) 31% of our students receive Free/Reduced Meals. They are inquisitive, hard working, and love technology and learning. Many of them come from homes with two working parents who support and encourage 21st century learning both in and out of the classroom, but not all families are able to cover the costs of enrichment classes. Because of this, we try to offer seminars (before school, lunch, recess) to stimulate interest and learning for a variety of extra-curricular subjects, especially in the STEM area.

My Project

This professional development opportunity will provide me with the tools to teach my students a completely new skill set - physical computing. We have used many of the robotics programs available at the elementary level, as well as other block coding programs, but we are ready for a greater challenge. As my students gain proficiency in coding, I have noticed their perseverance in problem solving increase. They are more likely to take risks with their learning, and work cooperatively to debug when needed. Now that we have built a foundation in computer science, I am challenged to advance my own knowledge base, which I really love!

This opportunity will allow me to deepen my students' understanding of programming by providing creative, hands-on experiences with a new platform.

I will also be able to share this training with other teachers in my district so that we can work together to spark young minds in the area of computer science. My ultimate goal is to help motivate young people to pursue STEM careers in robotics and coding.
