Physical, Chemical, Solid, Liquid, Gas Does Matter!!

Help me give my students hot plates and lab scales they need to be successful in science. My students need to measure, weigh and cook items as we study matter in science with its different states and properties.

My Students

My school is approaching 50 years of existence in our community. The area has a rich farming history. Generations of families have lived here.

The students come from many neighborhoods in the community to enroll in this school to learn Chinese as their second language.

For half of the day, my students are in Chinese class. Then they switch over to English class for the other half of the day where they are taught English Language Arts, Math and Social Studies.

My Project

These materials, hot plates and scales, will make a difference with the students I teach as they try to understand the chemical and physical changes that occur with matter. They will be able to have hands on opportunities to compare the total weight of a specified quantity of matter before and after it undergoes melting or freezing. They will be able to investigate the results of the combined weights of a liquid and a solid after the solid has been dissolved and then recovered from the liquid. They will be able to compare the total weight of an object to the weight of its individual parts after being disassembled. Also, they will be able to investigate chemical reactions in which the total weight of the materials before and after the reaction is the same. Furthermore, they will be able to continue their investigation of the measured weight of a remaining product to see why the remaining product is less than its reactants when a gas is produced.

Before these materials, my students have only been able to watch me do these experiments.

Now, they will be able to have actual hands-on opportunities as they conduct these experiments of matter in the classroom on their own. With actual hands-on experiences, students will be better able to retain their knowledge of physical and chemical changes of matter.
