Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a class of 4th and 5th grade students in a south side of a San Francisco Bay Area. Most of my students are from low income households and qualified for free lunches. Half of my class is Latino and/or English Language Learners and about 30% is African American. I had most of my students in this class last year in 4th grade and felt very fortunate to be able to loop them this year and be their fifth grade teacher. I love these kids! They are the reason I get up every morning to come to work! To be able to spark their imagination and creativity and critical thinking when we are working on math problems or STEAM projects just makes it so worthwhile! They love to be active and move around! They are artists in the making! They are scientists in the making! They are also avid readers! I know they love to come to school. They love to learn and they have questions after questions about their learning!! I just want to do more for them!
My Project
I am asking for a variety of P.E. equipment both for indoors and outdoors activities. My students love being active and playing different kinds of cooperative games and sports.
Many experts say that physical activities boosts learning and not to mention the tremendous benefits to their health and well-being.
I want physical activities to be part of my students daily learning. I do not want them to be sitting at their desks working on their computers, solving on math problems or reading all day without a few minutes a day being out and active. They will have an opportunity to exercise their growing body and mind.
So far we have been using a few pieces of equipment that we have in class to get our brains started for the day. For example, we have two footballs (not an actual size football used in regular games, but a softer kind for beginners), two soccer balls that are wearing out, a few playground balls (for dodge ball and four square games), a few basketballs (that need constant refilling of air) and a bunch of jump ropes. So I would love for them to have a better quality and variety P.E. equipment and game sets (like Flag Football or other indoors games that I have asked for in this project).
Physical activities are one of important parts of healthy living and life styles. My students have had nutrition classes and they have learned about healthy living and lifestyles. I would like to foster this healthy habits and hope that it will have a long lasting impact .
