Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 6th-grade students are a diverse group of students. A majority of them are English Language Learners, and over 70 percent of them receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch at school. Our school also serves a federally-funded dinner for any student ages 5-18 during the week. We lack the funds to do extra enrichment activities.
I want to provide an experience where the students can build marble and paper roller coasters to show what they have learned in their physics unit.
My Project
Making the cardstock and marble roller coasters will allow the students to design, test and redesign a marble roller coaster with their physics learning in mind. With a budget allocated, and a cost for each piece of track, tape, and marble, the students will cut, fold and tape their ways to an exciting way to demonstrate force, momentum, friction, and acceleration.
The process of collaboration and their criteria and constraints will challenge the students to use their materials wisely, making the best of the materials that they can afford with their budgets.
The students will be learning more than science as they work in teams to meet their challenge.
