This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second grade students are lower socioeconomic, second language learners eager to learn English and more about the world around them. One of the best ways that my students can acquire and master the English language is through reading passages and journaling their reactions to what they read. Unfortunately, very few of them have access to books in their homes, so my Library and my Writing Corners are popular places for my scholars to hang out.

Being a second language learner myself, I understand how motivating and inspirational it is to have fun, challenging games to practice sight words and phonics.

I want my students to have every opportunity to be engaged in their learning, whether interactively with others or independently.

My Project

My English language learners can best master the English language through reading and journaling about what they read. Whether used in interactive small groups, partners, or individual practice, these visually appealing phonetic games will allow the students to acquire and practice the usage of important grade-level-appropriate sight words, to construct elementary sentences, and eventually, to independently create paragraphs and even short stories.

I love seeing my second graders enthusiastically engaging at my Writing Center, offering suggestions and critiques as they help each other master the intricacies of elementary English.

Through this interchange, they get the chance to speak, listen, and think about the English words and phrases they are learning.
