My Project

In science class, the best way to start learning is by doing. That's exactly how I design my classroom. Experiments, problem solving, that's what we do each day!

I wish you could tour my classroom in person.

I teach chemistry, earth science, and forensics at GEO International High School, the first public high school of its kind in the south that has its entire population consisting of refugees and immigrants. Over 30 different countries and languages are represented within our classrooms. Oftentimes, students have arrived straight from war torn countries or refugee camps. Some of these students are walking into a school for the first time in their lives.

Obviously, having essential school supplies was not on the top of their list when they left their homes. My goal as their teacher is not only to leave them more educated, but to also alleviate their anxiety and stress about having simple supplies in class each day. Because they do not readily have school supplies or the ability to pay class fees or buy their own supplies, I spend my own money each year on supplies they need in my classes.

We also have labs in all of my science courses and use varying supplies throughout the school year. Earth science uses soil test kits to examine how many nutrients are available in a compost bin. Chemistry students use lots of pH paper in acid base labs all throughout the course. The drug chemistry forensics lab could be used in both chemistry and forensics, and I would love to incorporate this into the curriculum!
