Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember being taught a science concept by simply using a book with pictures? If you do, then you understand why I strive to have real materials that my students can use to understand science. Photosynthesis is a difficult concept for fourth graders to truly understand.
I have the most wonderful students because we start our year by building a caring class community!
They attend a title one school outside our nation's capital in Northern Virginia. Many speak another language. These students are driven to be successful in their school work. They learn to love science because I LOVE teaching science. I make sure they can learn by doing investigations and using hands on materials like real scientists do. Much of the science work the students are asked to do is with a partner or in a small group. They love to learn in this fashion.
My Project
Exploring Photosynthesis: A Close Look at Leaves is a hands on investigation into the process of photosynthesis. The students will complete several science investigations to help them understand how leaves turn sunlight into food. They will be using iodine and isopropyl alcohol and will therefore need need to wear safety goggles. The books will be used for the students to read to further their understanding of the content. The reading comprehension cards about plants will be placed in a reading station and the students will read them with a partner during our language arts block, thereby extending the learning of science into other subjects. I was excited to find the Photosynthesis e-book because I can pull it up on the smart board and we can use it whole class.
My students love to complete projects to further their learning. The Super Science Activities: Plants teacher's book will be utilized to create some projects that the students can work on independently or with a partner
Photosynthesis is such a difficult concept to understand because it is not something that the students "see" happening.
They will get to investigate how leaves change the sunlight into food and where the food is stored with these materials. Through several investigations they will understand how this illusive process works.
Help my students learn something fascinating and unforgettable through this project.
