Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I want my incoming sophomores at LHS to fall in love with science through its broad application. These are students from challenging backgrounds who have thus far been afforded limited opportunities to do any hands on science. LHS is a Place-Based Education model, meaning that we try to get kids beyond just reading from a textbook and understanding things conceptually.
We value training students to be critical and confident thinkers in response to a dynamic and sometimes volatile environment, in addition to cultivating lab procedural skills.
All students deserve a chance to truly experience the wonder of science in a hands-on, minds-on approach. My students are naturally curious but need support to become more self-driven and focused when it comes to science.
My Project
My students are working on developing strong NGSS Science and Engineering Practices, which is what real scientists do, such as modeling, data interpretation, arguments from evidence and so much more. They are engaging in hands on tasks to understand what it means to be a scientist in the 21st century.
What the students are lacking is the ability to document their progress through photographic evidence.
With the photo printer, ink and paper we will be able to keep track of the steps it takes to complete each project. Later when students are asked to reflect and make their thinking visible, they will have the photos to help showcase the evidence.
