My students are in tune with modern technology but lack the skills and life experience to understand the importance of getting away from their cell phones. I continually strive to teach them the importance of using a real camera and turning the lens to the world and not themselves.
My students are amazing.
In a school where they are continually separated by their grade and ability, I have the privilege of watching them interact and learn together--all grades, all abilities, all backgrounds. The beauty of this class is that each child comes with various different backgrounds--and each is creative in his/her own way. They continually amaze me when they work together. Some of my students have already had parents who have given up and these students want to learn the most.
My Project
My Introduction to Journalism class was created as a much needed elective for students to learn the value of the media. I have met this challenge head on and strive to teach these students as much as possible each day. We will use the camera to show students the value of using a camera and having a subject to photograph--other than a 'selfie.' We have gotten donations for a background and lights but lack enough cameras to teach the entire class. The students will begin by learning how the camera works and then branch into photographing on a background and how to manipulate lighting. The students will then learn about photojournalism and how to tell a story using a camera rather than words.
My hope and goal is that I can teach them enough skill to spark greater motivation to succeed in a field that is not getting as much attention as it should.
In a generation where kids love to use the camera on their phone, I hope to give them an experience with real photography. An experience that allows them to truly learn a skill.
